Finnish Lapland: good to know

When can you see the northern lights in Finnish Lapland?

On clear, dark nights from late August to early April. The further north and the further from town lights, the better the odds; a few nights give far more chances than one.

Rovaniemi or Saariselkä?

Rovaniemi is easier to reach and has more to do, including the Santa Claus sights. Saariselkä, three hours further north, is quieter, darker and closer to the fells.

How cold is it?

In January, often between −10 and −20 °C, with colder snaps. Hotels lend or rent thermal suits and boots for excursions.
