The verdict
A timber lodge in the Kerlingarfjöll mountains, in the middle of the Icelandic Highlands, between two glaciers and a valley of steaming hot springs. In winter, when the mountain road closes, the only way in is a 4×4 super-jeep transfer; the reward is the Highland Baths, geothermal pools under the stars, and a house full of warmth in an empty landscape. One MICHELIN Key.
The Highlands in snow: hot springs, snowshoes, skiing and the aurora with no one around.
You dislike long transfers: in winter the way in is a long super-jeep ride.
Stay at least two nights, and walk up into Hveradalir, the geothermal valley, on the clear morning.
The rooms
Sixty-four rooms across the lodge: Deluxe rooms and suites in the main hotel, in wood with deep window seats, and simpler twin and family rooms in the Aldan building.
The setting
In the Kerlingarfjöll mountains of the central Highlands, off the Kjölur route between the Langjökull and Hofsjökull glaciers.
The food
A restaurant with Icelandic comfort food and a convivial bar, shared by hikers in summer and snow travellers in winter.
Getting there
In summer by car or transfer via the Golden Circle and the Kjölur road; from October to June, when conditions close the road, by super-jeep transfer only.
Good to know
The Highland Baths, geothermal pools, are next to the lodge. The winter season runs from October to mid-June.
