Introducing

Introducing Andorra

Andorra is a mountain country the size of a large valley system, between France and Spain, and almost all of it is above 1,000 m. In winter it is a ski destination first: Grandvalira links six sectors from Pas de la Casa to Encamp, and Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís lie on the other side of the country. Its four hotels with a MICHELIN Key cover the whole range, from a ski-in lodge where the road ends to a pine-lined hotel in town and a four-room lodge reached by snowcat.

Your travel notes

  • Currency

The euro, although Andorra is not in the European Union. Taxes are low, which is why the main valley is lined with shops; customs limits apply when you carry goods out.

  • Food and meal times

Mountain cooking shared with Catalonia: trinxat of cabbage, potato and bacon, escudella stew in winter, river trout, snails and cheeses from the high pastures.

  • Getting around

By road only. Barcelona and Toulouse airports are about three hours away, with direct buses from both. Inside the country, buses run along the main valley and lifts climb from the villages to the slopes.

  • Tipping

As in Spain: service is included, and rounding up or leaving a few euros is enough.

  • When to go

December to early April for skiing, with Christmas, carnival and Easter the busiest weeks. July to September for walking in the high valleys.

Questions

Tips for travel in Andorra

Where is the best skiing in Andorra?

Grandvalira, the largest area, links Pas de la Casa, Grau Roig, Soldeu, El Tarter, Canillo and Encamp. Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís, on the other side of the country, are smaller and quieter.

What language is spoken in Andorra?

Catalan is the official language. Spanish and French are spoken everywhere, and English is common in the ski resorts.

Do you need a passport?

Carry a passport or an EU identity card: Andorra is outside the European Union and the Schengen area, and there are customs checks at both borders.
