The best ski hotels in Europe: MICHELIN Key hotels by resort
The short answer

For the grand ski town, St. Moritz: Badrutt's Palace, the Kulm and the Carlton hold three MICHELIN Keys each, and Suvretta House has its own lift into the Corviglia. To ski from the door with the Matterhorn in the window, CERVO in Zermatt. For the biggest network, the Dolomites, where Dolomiti Superski puts 12 areas on one pass: Aman Rosa Alpina in Alta Badia or Gardena Grödnerhof in Val Gardena. For a short trip from Spain, Andorra: Grau Roig at the foot of the slopes, or the Sport Hotel Hermitage, with the Soldeu gondola in the same building.

A ski hotel is judged twice: once as a hotel and once by the walk to the lift in ski boots. This guide covers only hotels with a MICHELIN Key in the 2026 selection, and for each one it says plainly how you get onto the snow — from the door, by the hotel's own lift, a short walk to a funicular, or a drive.

The figures for each resort come from its own website, read in September 2026. Season dates are the ones published for 2026/27; snow decides the rest.

St. Moritz: where the winter holiday began

In 1864 Johannes Badrutt, who ran the Kulm, made his English summer guests a bet: if they came back in December and did not like the Engadin in winter, he would refund their costs. St. Moritz now has three of Switzerland's ten three-Key hotels: the Kulm, Badrutt's Palace and the Carlton.

The main ski area is the Corviglia, 155 km of slopes reached from the village by the Chantarella funicular, open from 28 November 2026 to 4 April 2027. Badrutt's and the Carlton are a few minutes' walk from it. Suvretta House, on its own plateau outside the village, has a lift from the hotel into the Corviglia and is the one to choose if skiing is the point. The Kronenhof, in Pontresina eight kilometres away, is nearest to Diavolezza and the Corvatsch, where a 4.2 km run is floodlit for night skiing on Fridays. Our St. Moritz guide compares the five.

Zermatt and Gstaad

Zermatt is car-free and has the longest season here: skiing runs from 1 November 2026 to 3 May 2027, and on the glacier all year. The Zermatt pass covers up to 200 km, and 360 km with the Italian side at Cervinia. CERVO is a hamlet of chalets at the foot of the Sunnegga run, ski-in and ski-out, with the Matterhorn in the windows and the car-free village a five-minute walk down.

Gstaad is the opposite kind of resort: a village first and a ski area second, with 200 km of slopes across the region and Glacier 3000 at the top. The Alpina Gstaad, with three Keys, sits on a rise above the promenade; the ski areas of Wispile, Eggli and Glacier 3000 are reached by lift or shuttle. For the thermal baths rather than the slopes, 7132 Hotel in Vals has Peter Zumthor's Therme and a small ski area of its own on the Dachberg.

The Dolomites: the biggest network on one pass

Dolomiti Superski joins 12 ski areas on a single pass: about 1,200 km of slopes and 450 lifts, by its own count. At its centre is the Sellaronda, a 44 km circuit around the Sella massif — 23 km on skis and 21 km on lifts, about six hours — over the Gardena, Sella, Pordoi and Campolongo passes, marked orange clockwise and green anticlockwise. Most areas open on 4 December 2026 and close on 4 April 2027; Kronplatz opens on 28 November and stays open until 11 April.

For the Sellaronda, stay in Alta Badia or Val Gardena: Aman Rosa Alpina and Lagació in San Cassiano, or Gardena Grödnerhof in Ortisei. COMO Alpina Dolomites is on the Alpe di Siusi, the gentlest slopes of the network. Our Dolomites ski guide goes valley by valley. Madonna di Campiglio, in the Brenta Dolomites, is a separate ski area of about 156 km with its own pass; Lefay Dolomiti is above Pinzolo, whose lifts connect to Campiglio's.

Andorra: the Pyrenees, three hours from Barcelona

Grandvalira has 215 km of slopes and 74 lifts over seven sectors, from Encamp to Pas de la Casa, planned to open from 4 December 2026 to 4 April 2027. Andorra has no airport; Barcelona and Toulouse are about three hours away by road.

Grau Roig stands where the road ends, in the middle of Grandvalira, and you put your skis on at the door. The Sport Hotel Hermitage, in Soldeu, has the gondola to the slopes in the same complex. L'Ovella Negra is a lodge of four rooms at the end of the Incles valley, reached by snowcat in winter, and The Blackpine is the town choice, in Escaldes, with the slopes a drive up the valley. How to choose

To ski from the door: CERVO in Zermatt and Grau Roig in Andorra are on the slopes; Suvretta House has its own lift; the Hermitage has the gondola in the building. For a village to walk out into at night: Badrutt's Palace, the Carlton, Gardena Grödnerhof in Ortisei or Ancora Cortina on Cortina's Corso. For quiet: the Kronenhof in Pontresina, Forestis above the Plose slopes, or Lagació's apartments. For people who come for the spa as much as the snow: Lefay Dolomiti, The Alpina Gstaad and 7132 in Vals.
