The verdict
Gstaad's newest grand hotel, opened on 1 December 2012 on the hill above the village, built in old spruce and local stone so that it reads as a chalet the size of a hamlet. Fifty-six rooms and suites, a 2,000 m² Six Senses spa, a MICHELIN-starred dining room and a cellar of more than 1,700 labels. It is one of the ten hotels in Switzerland with three MICHELIN Keys.
A winter week with skiing, a serious spa and a hotel that feels private for its size.
You want a ski-in, ski-out door: the lifts are a short drive or shuttle away, and this is a hotel that costs what it costs.
Ask for a room on the valley side for the long view over the Saanenland, and book the spa's private suite early — it goes first at Christmas and in February.
The rooms
Fifty-six rooms and suites in reclaimed spruce, stone and wool, most with a balcony over the valley. The suites run to private saunas and fireplaces, and the two penthouses have their own pools.
The setting
On the Alpinastrasse, on a wooded rise a few minutes above Gstaad's promenade, with the Saanenland spread out below. Gstaad sits at 1,050 m; the ski areas of Wispile, Eggli and Glacier 3000 are reached by lift or shuttle.
The food
A MICHELIN-starred restaurant, a Japanese one, a Swiss stübli for fondue and raclette, and a cellar of more than 1,700 labels. Breakfast is served until late by Alpine standards.
Getting there
About two and a half hours by car from Geneva and two from Bern. The Golden Pass line reaches Gstaad from Montreux in under two hours, and the hotel sends a shuttle to the station.
Good to know
The hotel closes between seasons, as most of Gstaad does: check the dates before booking flights. The spa is Six Senses; treatments book up on snowy days.
