The verdict
A hamlet of chalets on the slope above Zermatt, where the Sunnegga piste runs past the door and the Matterhorn stands in the window. The interiors, by the Augsburg studio Dreimeta, do alpine without kitsch: raw wood, sheepskin, Moroccan and Levantine touches in the restaurants. Two MICHELIN Keys, and the best après-ski in the village that is not a nightclub.
Skiers who want to come off the piste into a bar, a spa and a room in that order.
You want a grand hotel: this is a resort of small houses, and the walk up from the village is steep.
Book Madre Nostra for the last night and the Ātman spa for the first afternoon — and take the Sunnegga funicular up, not the path.
The rooms
Rooms, suites and whole chalets across four categories — Nomad, Alpinist, Huntsman and the Overlook Lodge — with fireplaces, bunk rooms for families and, in the best of them, the Matterhorn framed from the bed.
The setting
On the slope above Zermatt, at the foot of the Sunnegga run, ski-in and ski-out in season and a five-minute walk down into a village where cars are banned.
The food
Four kitchens: Bazaar for Levantine food, Madre Nostra for Italian, Ferdinand for alpine classics and Grapes & Juniper for wine and gin. The après-ski at Chalet Ferdinand is an institution.
Getting there
Zermatt is car-free: park at Täsch and take the shuttle train, or arrive by train from Visp. The hotel meets guests at the station with an electric taxi.
Good to know
Ātman Mountain Spa is the quiet half of the resort, with yoga and a ritual room. In summer the same slope is a hiking trail, and the hotel keeps a climbing wall.
