The verdict
The hotel attached to the most famous building in the Alps: Peter Zumthor's Therme Vals, finished in 1996, sixty thousand slabs of local quartzite around water at 30 °C. The rooms are the second act — the House of Architects floors were designed by Zumthor, Tadao Ando, Kengo Kuma and Thom Mayne. Two MICHELIN Keys. You come for the baths and the valley, not for the service.
Anyone who would travel for a building, and wants the baths to themselves after closing.
You want a ski resort: Vals has one small area, and the point here is water and architecture.
Hotel guests get the baths in the evening, after the day visitors leave. Take the Zumthor floor if it is free; the Ando rooms are the calmest of the rest.
The rooms
Rooms in the two hotel buildings, among them the House of Architects floors by Peter Zumthor, Tadao Ando, Kengo Kuma and Thom Mayne, each floor built to its architect's drawing.
The setting
At 1,250 m in the Valsertal, a dead-end valley in Graubünden reached by one road. The thermal spring that feeds the baths rises at the head of the village.
The food
Two restaurants in the hotel, with a tasting menu in the evening and a simpler room for half board. The valley's own produce — cheese, lamb, mountain herbs — is the backbone.
Getting there
About two hours by car from Zurich, the last half hour up the valley. By train to Ilanz, then a post bus.
Good to know
The Therme is open to the public by day; guests have their own hours. The building is protected, so the architecture — not the plumbing — is the reason to come.
