The verdict
Sixty rooms and suites on the Alpe di Siusi, the largest high-altitude alpine meadow in Europe, in a building clad in quartzite and wood that you enter through a passage shaped like a rock crevice. Every room has a balcony or terrace towards the Sciliar and the meadow, and the house, now run by COMO, adds a Shambhala spa and three restaurants. One MICHELIN Key.
Skiing the Alpe di Siusi and Val Gardena, and cross-country and snowshoe days on the meadow itself.
You want a village: the hotel is up on the meadow, and cars are restricted there during the day.
Arrive before nine in the morning or after five in the evening, when private cars may drive up, or ask the hotel for a transit permit in advance.
The rooms
Sixty rooms and suites, alpine in material and contemporary in line, from 50 m² Mountain Rooms to 75 m² suites, each with a balcony or terrace.
The setting
At Compatsch, on the Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm) above Castelrotto, near the top station of the cable car from Siusi, with the Sciliar and the Sassolungo around the meadow.
The food
Three restaurants, Mediterranean and international, with a bar and a cigar lounge for the evening.
Getting there
About 40 km from Bolzano. Bolzano and Verona are the nearest stations; the hotel arranges transfers. Private cars can only drive up the meadow before 9 am and after 5 pm without a permit.
Good to know
The COMO Shambhala spa has an indoor pool facing the meadow through a wall of glass. There is a children's club for families.
