The verdict
A tuberculosis sanatorium begun in 1912 on the southern slope of the Plose, at 1,800 m above Brixen, which the Hinteregger family opened as a hotel in 2009 and rebuilt in 2020 with three slender timber towers. Sixty suites and a penthouse, all facing the Odle peaks of the Puez-Odle park, in pale wood, stone and nothing else. Two MICHELIN Keys, and the most photographed view in the Dolomites for a reason.
Silence, a view and a spa, with the Plose slopes a few minutes away.
You want a village: this is a hotel alone on a mountainside, and the evenings are yours to fill.
Ask for a tower suite on a high floor for the full width of the Odle, and be at the window at sunrise, when the peaks go pink.
The rooms
Sixty suites and a penthouse across the old sanatorium and the three towers, each with floor-to-ceiling glass facing the Odle. The Forestis Villa, a separate house, sleeps a group.
The setting
At 1,800 m on the Plose, the mountain above Brixen, in a forest clearing on the southern slope, with the Odle and the Puez-Odle nature park across the valley. The Plose ski area is minutes away.
The food
The restaurant cooks from South Tyrol and the forest around it, and the bar has the same view.
Getting there
About 30 minutes by car from Brixen station, which is on the Brenner line from Munich and Verona, and two and a half hours from Innsbruck or Verona airports.
Good to know
The house is kept quiet. The spa is built into the slope, with an outdoor pool facing the peaks.
