The verdict
In 1923 Antonio and Anna Demetz bought a private house in Ortisei and made it a hotel; their grandson Hugo Bernardi and his wife Cinzia rebuilt it in nine months in 2001, and in 2003 it became the first five-star hotel in the village. Sixty-two rooms in timber and quiet colours, a large spa, and Anna Stuben, a restaurant with one MICHELIN Star. One MICHELIN Key.
Val Gardena with a serious table: the Seceda and the Alpe di Siusi by day, Anna Stuben at night.
You want a hotel alone in nature: this is in the village, which is lively in season.
Book Anna Stuben for one evening when you book the room, and ask for a balcony over the valley.
The rooms
Sixty-two rooms and suites with exposed timber, knotty pine and modern furniture, with balconies towards the village and the valley.
The setting
In Ortisei (St. Ulrich), the main village of Val Gardena, with cable cars from the village to the Seceda and the Alpe di Siusi, and the Sella Ronda reachable from the valley.
The food
Restaurant Gardena for hotel guests, and Anna Stuben, with one MICHELIN Star, for creative cooking.
Getting there
About 45 minutes by car from Bolzano, and two and a half hours from Verona or Innsbruck airports.
Good to know
A Relais & Châteaux member since 2004. The spa has an indoor pool, saunas and treatment rooms.
