The verdict
Caspar Badrutt opened it in 1896 as the first hotel to call itself a Palace, and it is still run by his family: the tower, the Le Grand Hall with its view across the lake, a Rolls-Royce at the door and a winter calendar of polo, horse racing and cars on the frozen lake. Three MICHELIN Keys. It is the most theatrical hotel in the Alps, and it knows it.
St. Moritz in full costume: the Grand Hall, the bars, the season's events and a butler on call.
You want quiet or restraint: this is the social centre of St. Moritz in February.
Take tea in Le Grand Hall at four, by the windows, and book La Coupole-Matsuhisa well before you arrive in high season.
The rooms
Rooms and suites in the original building and the Serlas wing, the best of them facing Lake St. Moritz and the Engadin peaks; the tower and the family-named suites — Hans Badrutt, Helen Badrutt — are the grandest.
The setting
In the centre of St. Moritz Dorf, on the slope above the lake, a few minutes' walk from the Chantarella funicular up to the Corviglia ski area.
The food
More than ten restaurants and bars in the hotel and around it, among them La Coupole-Matsuhisa, Le Restaurant, Le Relais and the Chesa Veglia farmhouse across the road; Le Grand Hall is for tea and cocktails.
Getting there
About three and a half hours from Zurich by train, via Chur, the last stretch on the Rhaetian Railway. Samedan airport, fifteen minutes away, takes private aircraft.
Good to know
It opens for a winter and a summer season and closes in between. February is the busiest and most social month; March brings the most sun.
