The verdict
Pontresina's grand hotel, grown from a five-room inn the Gredig family bought in 1848 into the neo-baroque palace it became in the 1890s, with painted ceilings, a Roseg valley view and a spa of more than 2,000 m² dug in behind it. Two MICHELIN Keys, and the calmer alternative to St. Moritz, eight kilometres away.
Cross-country skiing, the Bernina glaciers and a grand hotel without the St. Moritz circus.
You want nightlife: Pontresina is a village, and quiet after nine.
Ask for a room facing the Roseg valley, and walk or ski the valley to the Roseg glacier restaurant at the end of it.
The rooms
Rooms and suites in the historic building, the best of them facing south to the Roseg valley and the glaciers of the Bernina range.
The setting
At the edge of Pontresina at 1,800 m, eight kilometres from St. Moritz, at the mouth of the Roseg valley, with Diavolezza and Corvatsch the nearest ski areas.
The food
A grand dining room under a painted ceiling, a more informal restaurant and a bar; the salons are part of the reason to stay.
Getting there
By train via Chur to Pontresina, about three and a half hours from Zurich. Samedan airport is ten minutes away.
Good to know
It shares an owner with the Kulm in St. Moritz. Seasonal, with a winter and a summer opening.
