The verdict

Massimo Bottura and Lara Gilmore's 18th-century house in the countryside outside Modena, filled with their own things: contemporary art, books, vinyl, Italian cars and motorcycles, and a pantry of Emilian food that guests may raid. The dinner is the point — Francescana at Maria Luigia, nine of Osteria Francescana's most famous dishes at communal tables — but the house works on its own: two pools, a tennis court, a vegetable garden and a balsamic vinegar cellar of 1,200 barrels. Three MICHELIN Keys.

Best for

A food pilgrimage to Emilia that is also a weekend in a very personal country house.

Skip if

You travel with young children, or want to stay on a Sunday or Monday night between November and April.

Insider tip

Book the non-refundable rate if you want the dinner: it is the only way to add Francescana at Maria Luigia to the room. The visit to the Acetaia is free for guests.

The rooms

Twenty-five rooms, each furnished with art and design pieces chosen for it, many from Osteria Francescana's own memory; from Festina Lente rooms of 30 m² to the Alcova penthouse with a tower room. Breakfast and the house kitchen's treats are included.

The setting

At San Damaso, in the Emilian countryside fifteen minutes from Modena: gardens, two wood-decked pools, a tennis court, a gym set among the owners' cars and motorcycles, a wood-fired oven and a vegetable garden.

The food

Francescana at Maria Luigia serves nine courses of Osteria Francescana's greatest hits, from The Crunchy Part of the Lasagna to Oops! I Dropped the Lemon Tart, at communal tables around the open kitchen, at €330 a head; it is open to non-residents too.

Getting there

Modena is about half an hour by train from Bologna; the house is a fifteen-minute drive from the town centre.

Good to know

Open every day from May to October; from November to April, from Tuesday afternoon to Sunday noon. The house's pages give 15 or 12 as the minimum age: check when you book. It is not on Booking.com, so the link goes to its own site.
