The verdict
Two Renaissance palaces in the Sant'Ambrogio quarter, a fifteen-minute walk from the Duomo, around one of the largest private gardens in Florence: the Giardino della Gherardesca, 4.5 hectares of old trees, statues, fountains and a small Ionic temple, with an outdoor pool among them. Palazzo della Gherardesca was built in 1473 by Bartolomeo Scala and later belonged to a Medici cardinal and to the della Gherardesca family; its frescoed suites and sky-lit atrium are the reason to stay. Three MICHELIN Keys, and Il Palagio holds a MICHELIN Star.
Florence with a resort's garden and pool, and frescoes on the ceiling of your room.
You want to step out onto the Ponte Vecchio: the Duomo is fifteen minutes on foot and the Oltrarno further, and the hotel's charm is that it hides from the centre.
Book Il Palagio with the room: in the warm months dinner moves onto its terrace over the garden. From May to October the hotel also lays a dinner for its guests on a terrace on the Ponte Vecchio.
The rooms
A hundred and twenty-one rooms and suites — 76 rooms and 45 suites — across the 15th-century Palazzo della Gherardesca and the 16th-century Palazzo del Nero. The historic suites keep original frescoes and marble bathrooms; the Royal Suite runs to 234 m², and the best suites look over the garden or towards the Duomo.
The setting
On Borgo Pinti in Sant'Ambrogio, on the north-east side of the historic centre. The garden was planted in the 15th century and kept out of sight for centuries; besides its statues, fountains and temple it now has an outdoor pool and a hot tub open all year.
The food
Il Palagio, in the old palazzo, holds one MICHELIN Star and cooks Florentine flavours with a modern hand. The Atrium Bar, designed by Pierre-Yves Rochon, sits under the skylight of the old courtyard, and Al Fresco, by the pool, is a trattoria with pizzas in the evening.
Getting there
About twenty minutes by car from Florence airport (15 km), an hour from Pisa airport, and ten minutes by car from Santa Maria Novella station. The Duomo is about fifteen minutes on foot.
Good to know
Palazzo del Nero, with the Onde restaurant and Bar Berni, is closed for works until 31 March 2027; the pool, the spa, with ten treatment rooms, and the garden stay open. The three Keys are those of the Guide's 2026 selection.
