The verdict
Nusfjord, on the south coast of the Lofoten Islands, is one of Norway's oldest fishing villages: a harbour lined with red rorbuer, the stilted cabins that once housed cod fishermen. Many are now rooms, with the old timbers kept and a quiet contemporary finish; a few have been left as they were in the 1890s, without running water. Locals still live in the village. One MICHELIN Key.
Lofoten as it was, with the mountains straight out of the sea and the aurora over the harbour.
You want a spa hotel: this is a working village with rooms in historic buildings.
Come between February and April for the skrei, the spawning cod, when the drying racks fill up around the harbour.
The rooms
Rorbuer and rooms in the village's old buildings, with original timbers, plain white walls, freestanding baths in some and the harbour outside the window.
The setting
In Nusfjord, a small harbour on the south coast of Flakstadøya in the Lofoten Islands, surrounded by granite peaks.
The food
A restaurant in the village, with Lofoten cod and lamb on the menu.
Getting there
About half an hour by car from Leknes airport, which has flights from Bodø; the Bodø–Moskenes ferry is the other way in.
Good to know
Nusfjord is also visited as a museum village by day; the evenings belong to the guests and the people who live there.
