The verdict

A dozen houses and rooms built into the socalcos — the farmed terraces of the island's west coast — above Calheta, with a pool on the edge of the drop and the sea filling the horizon. One room is carved into the rock; another sits under a thatched roof. Chef Octávio Freitas cooks Madeiran produce at Razão, which won Portugal's National Tourism Award for gastronomic tourism in 2023.

Best for

Walkers and eaters who want the west coast, the levadas and a table worth staying in for.

Skip if

You want Funchal: it is an hour away, and these roads are steep and narrow at night.

Insider tip

Casa da Gruta, cut into the rock, is the one to ask for — and book Razão for the evening you arrive, before the drive tempts you elsewhere.

The rooms

About a dozen units: standalone houses on the terraces — Casa da Gruta in the rock, Casa da Palha under thatch, Casa da Cascata by the stream — two village-style vilas and a suite and junior suite in the main house, all with the sea in view.

The setting

At Lombo do Salão, above Estreito da Calheta on the sunnier west coast, among banana and vine terraces. Calheta's beach is a few minutes below, and the Paul da Serra plateau and the west-coast levadas are the reason to be here.

The food

Razão, the hotel's restaurant, is chef Octávio Freitas's Madeiran kitchen: island produce, fish from the coast below and a dining room that opens to the terraces. It holds the National Tourism Award for gastronomic tourism (2023).

Getting there

About 50 minutes by car from Madeira airport and 45 from Funchal, the last part on hairpins. A car is essential.

Good to know

This is a rural hotel on a working hillside, not a resort: paths between the houses are steep, and the quiet at night is complete.
