The verdict
Twenty-three suites in two century-old houses and a new wing, joined by gardens with an infinity pool above Funchal bay. It is the quiet, grown-up corner of PortoBay's Cliff Bay: its own reception, its own restaurant in Avista, and the run of the larger hotel next door, including sea access and Il Gallo d'Oro. Two MICHELIN Keys, and the best sunset terrace in the city.

You want a beach: this is a cliff, and the sea is reached by ladder from the platform below.
Ask for a suite on the garden level for direct access to the lawn and the pool, and book Avista's terrace for the hour before sunset rather than for dinner.
The rooms
Twenty-three suites of 60 to 85 m², all with a balcony or garden access: the Artistic and Duplex suites in the new wing, and the quieter ones in the two old houses. Most look over the bay towards Funchal.
The setting
On the Estrada Monumental, on the cliff west of Funchal, with gardens, an infinity pool and views across the bay to the city and the Garajau headland. The centre is a twenty-minute walk along the seafront promenade.
The food
Avista is the hotel's own restaurant, Mediterranean and Japanese on a terrace over the sea. Next door, at The Cliff Bay, Il Gallo d'Oro holds two MICHELIN stars, and guests have access to it and to the rest of the hotel's restaurants and spa.
Getting there
About 20 minutes by car from Madeira airport. A car is not needed for Funchal itself; it is for the rest of the island.
