Portugal has 69 hotels with a MICHELIN Key in the 2026 selection: two with three Keys, fourteen with two and fifty-three with one. The three-Key hotels are Vila Vita Parc in the Algarve and Penha Longa in Sintra. Porto, with Vila Nova de Gaia across the river, has the most Key hotels of any city (15), ahead of Lisbon (11); the Algarve has 11, the Alentejo 7, the Douro Valley 6 and Madeira 5. We rate eighteen of the 69, in Lisbon, Comporta, the Douro, the Algarve and Madeira.
The MICHELIN Key is the Guide's award for hotels, from one to three, judged on architecture and interior design, service, personality, value for money and what the hotel gives back to its surroundings. It says nothing about the restaurant, and nothing about size or price.
Portugal's 2026 selection has 69 hotels with a Key: two with three, fourteen with two and fifty-three with one. We rate eighteen of them on the Unlisted Index, in the parts of the country we cover — Lisbon, the Comporta coast, the Douro, the Algarve and Madeira — and list them all below, after the count by region and the sixteen at the top of the list.

Where the 69 Keys are
The Guide lists its hotels town by town; this is the count by region, from its own index on 3 October 2026. Porto and Lisbon hold almost a third of the Keys between them, nearly all with one.

Porto has more Keys than Lisbon
Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, across the Douro from it, hold fifteen Key hotels against Lisbon's eleven, and only one of them has two: the Vinha Boutique Hotel in Gaia. Most have between twenty and ninety rooms. We have not reviewed Porto yet; it is the largest gap in our Portugal coverage.
One group stands out across the country. Torel holds six Keys — four hotels in Porto, Torel Palace in Lisbon and Torel Quinta da Vacaria in the Douro — more than any other company in Portugal.
The Algarve: eleven Keys on two coasts
The Algarve has eleven Key hotels, and six of them are in our Algarve guide: the three-Key Vila Vita Parc, Vila Joya and Bela Vista with two, and 3HB Faro, Colégio Charm House in Tavira and Conversas de Alpendre near Cacela with one. The other five hold one Key each: Octant Praia Verde at Altura, Palácio de Tavira, Praia do Canal near Aljezur on the west coast, Viceroy at Ombria near Loulé and Vilalara at Armação de Pêra.
The Douro and the Alentejo: wine country
Six Key hotels stand in the Douro Valley, most of them on wine estates in the heart of the valley, around Peso da Régua and Lamego. Six Senses Douro Valley, a restored manor above the river at Samodães with 71 rooms, suites and villas, holds two; Torel Quinta da Vacaria, on a historic vineyard at Régua, holds one.
The Alentejo has seven, and two of its three two-Key hotels are inland: Quinta do Paral at Vidigueira and Torre de Palma Wine Hotel at Monforte. The third is on the coast: Vermelho, the thirteen-room hotel Christian Louboutin made in the village of Melides. Sublime Comporta and Spatia Comporta, in the pines near Muda, a short drive from the Comporta beaches, hold one each.

How we built this page
The Keys and the counts are those of the MICHELIN Guide's 2026 selection for Portugal, read from the Guide's own hotel index on 3 October 2026; the totals match the country listing we checked on 22 September. The regions are our grouping of the Guide's towns. Room counts are the Guide's. Every hotel we rate is scored on the Unlisted Index. Inclusion is editorial and never paid. Availability links may be affiliate links, which can earn The Unlisted a commission without changing your price.
