The verdict

A five-star resort of white, Moorish-style buildings in 22 hectares of subtropical gardens on the cliffs at Porches, with direct access to a secluded sandy beach, villas with private pools, around a dozen restaurants and bars led by the two-MICHELIN-starred Ocean, and a vaulted wine cellar. It holds three MICHELIN Keys — one of only two hotels in Portugal to do so — and is the most complete resort in the Algarve.

Best for

Families and couples who want a beach, pools and serious restaurants in one place, with nothing to organise for a week.

Skip if

You want a small house with a personal welcome: this is a large resort, and it is priced at the very top of Portugal.

Insider tip

Book Ocean when you book the room, and ask for a Deluxe Ocean View room in the Residence: they face the sea from a private terrace or garden above the cliffs.

The rooms

Rooms and suites are spread across the Main Building, the Residence, Oasis Parc and the Spa, and there are whitewashed villas with private pools. Interiors are bright and sea-inspired; depending on the category you get a terrace over the ocean, a rooftop terrace or a Portuguese tile mosaic.

The setting

On the clifftops at Alporchinhos, between Armação de Pêra and Carvoeiro, in 22 hectares of gardens laid out like a Portuguese village, with cobbled paths, flowers and water. The resort has direct access to a secluded white-sand beach below, and the sea caves around Benagil are a short drive along the coast.

The food

Ocean, led by head chef Hans Neuner, holds two MICHELIN stars and looks straight out to sea. Around it are around a dozen restaurants and bars, from Portuguese and Mediterranean cooking to casual lunches by the pool, and a vaulted wine cellar underground for tastings.

Getting there

About 40 minutes by car from Faro airport; the resort arranges transfers. A car is useful for exploring the coast, less so if you plan to stay put.

Good to know

A member of The Leading Hotels of the World, with a spa, several pools, activities for children and a mini golf course; families are welcome. It is a large resort: allow time to walk between the beach, the pools and the restaurants.
