For a complete resort by the sea, Vila Vita Parc in Porches, with three MICHELIN Keys. For food, Vila Joya above Praia da Galé, whose restaurant holds two stars. For a historic house on a cliff, Bela Vista at Praia da Rocha. For a town on foot, Colégio Charm House in Tavira. For a family in the countryside, Conversas de Alpendre near Cacela Velha. For a city base with a rooftop pool, 3HB Faro. All six hold a MICHELIN Key.
The Algarve is full of resorts, and many of them are interchangeable. The six hotels in this guide are not. All six hold a MICHELIN Key in Portugal's 2026 selection, and they run from a three-Key resort on the cliffs to a tree house in a carob tree.
What separates them is less the star rating than the coast they sit on. West of Faro the Algarve is cliffs, coves and resorts; east of Faro it is a lagoon, sandbar islands and small towns. Choose the coast first, and the hotel follows.

Our six Algarve hotels with a MICHELIN Key, at a glance
Faro airport sits in the middle of the coast: the farthest of these hotels, Bela Vista, is about 50 minutes away, the nearest a quarter of an hour.
| Hotel | Keys | Where | Best for | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vila Vita Parc | 3 | Porches, west | A complete resort with a beach and a two-star restaurant | Large, and priced at the very top |

| Bela Vista | 2 | Praia da Rocha, Portimão | A 1918 palace on the cliff, for adults | A busy seafront in summer |
| Colégio Charm House | 1 | Tavira | A town on foot, with a courtyard pool | The beach is across the lagoon |

West or east: which Algarve
The western and central Algarve, the Barlavento, is the one on the postcards: golden limestone cliffs, coves you reach down wooden steps and sea caves such as Benagil. It is also where most of the resorts are. Vila Vita Parc at Porches, Vila Joya at Praia da Galé and Bela Vista at Praia da Rocha all sit on this stretch; Lagos and Sagres, further west, have no Key hotel yet.
East of Faro, the Sotavento is flatter, greener and calmer. The coast faces the Ria Formosa, a lagoon protected as a natural park, and the long beaches are on sandbar islands reached by boat. Tavira is the town to stay in, and the villages around Cacela Velha are the quietest corner of the coast. If you want to walk to dinner and swim from an island, go east; if you want cliffs and a resort, go west.
Best resort: Vila Vita Parc
Vila Vita Parc is the Algarve resort by which the others are measured, and one of only two hotels in Portugal with three MICHELIN Keys. Its white, Moorish-style buildings are scattered through 22 hectares of gardens on the cliffs at Porches, with direct access to a secluded beach, villas with private pools, a spa and around a dozen restaurants and bars. The best of them, Ocean, holds two MICHELIN stars.
It is large and it is expensive. Choose it for a week in which nobody wants to organise anything, and book Ocean when you book the room.

Best for food: Vila Joya
Vila Joya is a private villa above Praia da Galé, west of Albufeira, which its founder began turning into a hideaway in 1982. It has thirteen rooms and suites, each with a view of the Atlantic, gardens that run down towards the dunes, and the restaurant where Dieter Koschina has held two MICHELIN stars since 1999 — the first in Portugal to win two. It holds two MICHELIN Keys.
It is the hotel for people who travel to eat, and it is small, so rooms and tables go early. There is no kids' club and no town outside the gate; that is the point.

Best for history: Bela Vista
Bela Vista Hotel & Spa is a summer palace built in 1918 on the cliff above Praia da Rocha, with a turret and century-old hand-painted tiles, and a hotel since the 1930s. It is now a Relais & Châteaux house spread across three buildings, with two MICHELIN Keys and Vista, whose chef, João Oliveira, holds a MICHELIN star.
Book a room in the Palacete, the original house, for the tiles and the period rooms. The hotel says it is not suited to children, and Praia da Rocha's seafront is lively in summer, so it works best for couples outside July and August.

Best town: Colégio Charm House in Tavira
Tavira is the prettiest town on the coast — a river, a bridge, dozens of churches and roofs shaped like pyramids — and Colégio Charm House is the best way to stay in it. The 18th-century palacete, later a boys' school and then empty for thirty years, reopened in 2021 with about twenty rooms and suites, a pool in the courtyard, a rooftop over the town and a restaurant. It holds a MICHELIN Key.
Ask for a suite with its own plunge pool or a room in the old chapel. The beach is on Ilha de Tavira, a short boat ride across the lagoon.

Best for families: Conversas de Alpendre
Conversas de Alpendre is a family-run country hotel among orange, carob and olive trees near Cacela Velha, run by the same family as Colégio. Its dozen rooms include a tree house built by hand six and a half metres up a carob tree, a cabin and a family loft with private pools, and there is a heated saltwater pool, a surprise dinner every night and a jeep to take guests to the lagoon beach below Cacela Velha. It holds a MICHELIN Key.
You need a car, and restaurants are a drive away. In return you get space, trees and the most personal welcome on the coast.

Best city base: 3HB Faro
Most visitors only land in Faro. 3HB Faro, the city's first five-star hotel, is a reason to stay: about a hundred rooms on a pedestrian street in the centre, a rooftop infinity pool over the city and the Ria Formosa, a spa with a heated indoor pool and a rooftop restaurant. It holds a MICHELIN Key and is fifteen minutes from the airport, which makes it the right first or last night of a trip, or a base for the island beaches by boat.
Car, airport and when to go
Faro airport serves the whole coast. You can do without a car in Faro and Tavira, which have boats to the islands and a train along the coast, and in a resort you do not plan to leave; everywhere else, hire one. Seville airport is under two hours from the eastern Algarve, which suits trips that combine the two.
May, June, September and October are the best months: warm days without the crowds of July and August. Winters are mild and sunny, a good escape if you do not need to swim in the sea.
How we selected these hotels
The Keys are those of Portugal's 2026 MICHELIN selection, checked against the Guide's own listings on 3 October 2026. The Algarve has eleven hotels with a Key; besides our six, the Guide lists Octant Praia Verde at Altura, Palácio de Tavira, Praia do Canal near Aljezur, Viceroy at Ombria near Loulé and Vilalara at Armação de Pêra, all with one. Every Key hotel in Portugal, by region, is in our MICHELIN Key guide to Portugal. Each is scored on the public Unlisted Index. Room counts, facilities and policies were checked against the hotels' own websites on 13 September 2026; they change, so confirm them when you book.

Frequently asked questions
Which Algarve hotels have a MICHELIN Key?
Eleven, in Portugal's 2026 selection. Six are in this guide: Vila Vita Parc in Porches with three Keys; Vila Joya in Albufeira and Bela Vista in Portimão with two; and 3HB Faro, Colégio Charm House in Tavira and Conversas de Alpendre near Cacela with one each. The other five, all with one Key, are Octant Praia Verde at Altura, Palácio de Tavira, Praia do Canal near Aljezur, Viceroy at Ombria near Loulé and Vilalara at Armação de Pêra.
What is the best area to stay in the Algarve?
West of Faro for cliffs, coves and resorts — Porches, Albufeira and Portimão. East of Faro for a quieter coast on the Ria Formosa lagoon, island beaches by boat and Tavira, the prettiest town to walk. For a first trip with a car, the west; for calm and a town on foot, the east.
What is the best luxury hotel in the Algarve?
Vila Vita Parc, in Porches, is the most complete: a resort on the cliffs with a beach, villas with private pools and Ocean, a two-MICHELIN-star restaurant. It is one of two hotels in Portugal with three MICHELIN Keys. For a smaller house, Vila Joya has two Keys and a two-star restaurant.
Is there an adults-only luxury hotel in the Algarve?
Bela Vista, at Praia da Rocha, says it is not recommended for children, and booking channels list it as adults only. The other Key hotels in this guide welcome families.
Can you visit the Algarve without a car?
Yes, if you stay in Faro or Tavira — both have boats to the island beaches and a train along the coast — or in a resort you do not plan to leave. To explore the western cliffs and coves, hire a car.
