The verdict
Faro's first five-star hotel, on a pedestrian street in the centre of the Algarve's capital, with about a hundred rooms designed by Paulo Lobo, a rooftop infinity pool over the city and the Ria Formosa, a spa with a heated indoor pool and Hábito, a rooftop restaurant. It holds a MICHELIN Key and makes Faro, usually a place people fly through, worth a night or two.
Travellers who want a city base for the old town and the Ria Formosa islands, with a rooftop pool, fifteen minutes from the airport.
You want a beach outside the door or a small historic house: this is a contemporary city hotel, and the beaches are on the islands, by boat.
Book a room with a massage bath on the balcony, and take the boat from the old-town pier to Ilha Deserta or Culatra for a day on the sand.
The rooms
About a hundred rooms and suites in soft wood tones, from Standard to Superior and family categories. Some have a double massage bath on the balcony, and those are adults only. All have walk-in showers and free use of the spa and the gym.
The setting
On Rua Vasco da Gama, a pedestrian shopping street in the centre of Faro, a short walk from the marina, the walled old town, the cathedral and the Carmo church with its Chapel of Bones. The lagoon's island beaches are reached by boat from the old town.
The food
Hábito, on the roof, serves a fine-dining menu inspired by the region with views over Faro and the Ria Formosa (dinner, Tuesday to Saturday). Forno Nero, by the lobby, serves Italian-inspired dishes with an Algarve twist every evening, and H.Bar mixes cocktails on the roof.
Getting there
About 15 minutes from Faro airport. The street is closed to cars: there are four short-stay spaces nearby for check-in, and a covered car park 120 metres away at a guest rate.
Good to know
The spa has a heated indoor pool, sauna and Turkish bath, and there is a gym. Families are welcome, with family rooms and a kids' corner.
