The verdict

An 18th-century building on Praça Luís de Camões, where the Grand Hôtel de l'Europe stood until 1980, opened as the Bairro Alto Hotel in 2005 and reopened in 2019 after the Pritzker laureate Eduardo Souto de Moura joined it to three neighbouring buildings. The rooms doubled to 87, the lobby gained two cast-iron sculptures by Rui Chafes, and the top floor became BAHR, a restaurant and terrace over the roofs and the Tagus. It holds one MICHELIN Key.

Best for

A first visit to Lisbon, with Chiado and Bairro Alto on the doorstep and the river from the terrace.

Skip if

You need silence at night: the square is the meeting point of Bairro Alto, and the side streets stay lively until late.

Insider tip

Book a table on the BAHR terrace for sunset, and ask for a room on the Tejo side — the category names say 'Tejo' when the river is in the window.

The rooms

Eighty-seven rooms and suites across the four 18th-century buildings, with interiors by Atelier Bastir and TheStudio: Portuguese timber and tiles, handmade fittings, original photographs and paintings. The corner rooms look over the square; the Tejo rooms and suites over the roofs to the river.

The setting

On Praça Luís de Camões, the hinge between Chiado's cafés and theatres and the grid of Bairro Alto, with the Baroque churches of Loreto and Encarnação a few steps away. There is a quieter rooftop above the restaurant and a small wellness centre.

The food

BAHR, on the top floor, is chef Bruno Rocha's Portuguese cooking, with a market menu at lunch and à la carte in the evening; it is in the MICHELIN Guide. The ground-floor patisserie bakes pastéis de nata, and the mezzanine bar is the hotel's living room.

Getting there

About 25 minutes by taxi from Lisbon airport. Baixa-Chiado metro station is a five-minute walk, and the tram 28 stops in the square.

Good to know

It is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World. Rooms on the square hear the evening crowd; the Tejo side is quieter.
