The verdict
Lisbon's great hotel of the twentieth century: ten storeys above the Parque Eduardo VII, opened in 1959 to designs by Porfírio Pardal Monteiro and furnished in Art Deco and Louis XVI style by Portuguese craftsmen. Its public rooms hold one of the country's largest private collections of mid-century Portuguese art, with tapestries drawn by Almada Negreiros among them. With 282 rooms it is not small, but it holds two MICHELIN Keys, and CURA, its restaurant, a Star.
Travellers who want grand-hotel service, a real spa and a Starred dinner without leaving the building.
You want the old town at the door: the hotel sits above the Avenida, and the Baixa is a taxi or a long downhill walk away.
Run or walk the rooftop track early, when the city is still grey-blue below, and book CURA's Percurso menu, the one built on Portuguese recipes.
The rooms
Two hundred and eighty-two rooms, 38 of them suites, many with a terrace over the park or the city. The rooms take their cue from the hotel's 1950s style, and the larger suites, among them one named for Almada Negreiros, are furnished like apartments.
The setting
On Rua Rodrigo da Fonseca, beside the Parque Eduardo VII and above the Marquês de Pombal roundabout, where the Avenida da Liberdade begins its descent to the river. The hotel has an indoor lap pool of 18 metres, a heated outdoor pool, a spa and a running track on the roof.
The food
CURA, with its own entrance, is chef Rodolfo Lavrador's modern Portuguese cooking in two tasting menus, and holds one MICHELIN Star. Varanda, facing the park, is known for its weekend brunch, and the Ritz Bar keeps the hotel's mid-century glamour.
Getting there
About 15 minutes by taxi from Lisbon airport. The Marquês de Pombal metro station is a short walk away.
Good to know
The hotel is large and busy with events and weddings. Ask at the desk about the art: it hangs throughout the public rooms and suites.
