The verdict

Two private mansions built in 1902 and 1904 on the Colina de Sant'Ana, the most central of Lisbon's seven hills, joined by a terrace and a pool that look straight across the Baixa to the castle. It opened as a hotel in 2013, with interiors by Isabel Sá Nogueira and rooms named after Portuguese kings and queens; they are classic in taste and uneven from one to the next. The view, the two pools and 2Monkeys, a twelve-seat counter with a MICHELIN Star, earned it its first Key in 2026.

Best for

A view-first stay with a pool in the centre of the city, and a dinner worth booking the trip around.

Skip if

Design is your priority: the rooms are traditional and vary a good deal, and the hill is steep in every direction.

Insider tip

Book 2Monkeys as soon as your dates are fixed — there are only twelve seats — and walk down to the Avenida through the Jardim do Torel, whose miradouro looks across the valley to the castle.

The rooms

Thirty-three rooms and suites, a villa and five apartments, according to the hotel, spread over the original palaces and a newer building. Chandeliers and classic furniture set the tone; many rooms have balconies over the city, while others are plainer and look inward.

The setting

On Rua Câmara Pestana, beside the Jardim do Torel on the Sant'Ana hill, above the Avenida da Liberdade. The terrace pool faces the Baixa and the castle; a second pool sits in the garden. The Calla spa has a hammam and two treatment rooms.

The food

2Monkeys, in the palace's former wine cellar, is chefs Vítor Matos and Guilherme Spalk's creative tasting menu for twelve guests around an open kitchen, with one MICHELIN Star. Black Pavilion is the hotel's everyday restaurant, and Dukes Bar serves wine and tea under a carved wooden ceiling.

Getting there

About 20 minutes by taxi from Lisbon airport. The Avenida and Restauradores metro stations are a short walk downhill.

Good to know

The group also runs Torel Quinta da Vacaria in the Douro. Streets around the hotel are steep and cobbled, and taxis are the easy way up at night.
