The verdict

A palace of 1750 at the top of Santa Catarina, between Chiado and the river, opened as a hotel of eighteen rooms in December 2017. The architect Teresa Nunes da Ponte kept the stucco, the carved ceilings and the azulejo panels — the painted tiles of Portugal — and set a clean modern line beside them. From the roof, the bar and a small pool look over the old town and the Tagus. It is in the MICHELIN Guide, without a Key, and its view is among the best a Lisbon hotel can offer.

Best for

A few days in the old city with a room that feels like a private house, and the river at breakfast.

Skip if

You want a spa, a large pool or a quiet street: the pool is a rooftop plunge, and Santa Catarina is busy on summer evenings.

Insider tip

Ask for one of the historic suites with painted tiles, and take the first drink on the roof before sunset, when the light falls on the Ponte 25 de Abril.

The rooms

Eighteen rooms and suites. The historic suites keep stucco ceilings, fireplaces and blue-and-white tile panels, some with a freestanding bath in the room; the upper rooms are more contemporary, in pale wood and linen, several with the river in the window.

The setting

On Rua de Santa Catarina, beside the Miradouro de Santa Catarina — a miradouro is one of the city's public viewpoints — with Chiado and Bairro Alto a few minutes' walk uphill and the river below. The rooftop has a bar with a 360-degree view and a small pool off the winter garden.

The food

Suba, on the ground floor with its own entrance, is chef Fábio Alves's modern Portuguese cooking, with recipes from his native Trás-os-Montes; it is in the MICHELIN Guide. The Lisbon Club 55 serves traditional Portuguese dishes, and breakfast is laid in the winter garden.

Getting there

About 25 minutes by taxi from Lisbon airport, traffic permitting. The last streets are steep and narrow; the hotel is best reached by car, then explored on foot.

Good to know

There is a small spa for massages. Chiado's shops and cafés are a ten-minute walk; the tram 28 passes nearby at Calhariz.
