The verdict
The five-storey house that João Frederico Ludovice, architect to King João V and designer of the palace at Mafra, built for himself in Bairro Alto in the early 18th century, and which came through the 1755 earthquake. It later became the Lisbon home of the Port Wine Institute's Solar do Vinho do Porto, which still pours on the ground floor, and opened as a hotel of 61 rooms in April 2022 after a restoration led by Miguel Câncio Martins. The frescoes, the tiled halls and the planted atrium are the reason to come; the rooms are comfortable rather than memorable. It holds one MICHELIN Key.
Wine lovers who want a central base with a Port cellar downstairs and the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara across the street.
You expect the rooms to match the public spaces: they are pleasant, but more hotel than palace.
Taste at the Solar do Vinho do Porto on a weekday afternoon, then cross to the miradouro for the view of the castle at dusk.
The rooms
Sixty-one rooms and suites, each different, with Art Deco details, custom carpets inspired by the Douro vineyards and large bathrooms with Caudalie products. Light and calm, but more standard than the building around them.
The setting
The palace fills a whole block on Rua de São Pedro de Alcântara, at the top of Bairro Alto and the edge of Príncipe Real, opposite the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara. Inside, an atrium with a vertical garden rises through the floors; the halls keep frescoes, stone arches and blue-and-white tiles.
The food
Federico, on the lower floor, is framed by plants and art that recall Ludovice's first trade as a goldsmith, and cooks Portuguese food with a long list of Portuguese wines. The Solar do Vinho do Porto, run by the Port and Douro Wine Institute, serves Port by the glass on weekdays.
Getting there
About 25 minutes by taxi from Lisbon airport. It sits at the top of the Calçada da Glória, whose funicular has been closed since the accident of September 2025, so the climb from Restauradores is on foot or by taxi.
Good to know
There is a Caudalie spa. Bairro Alto's bars start a street away, so ask for a room on the quieter side if you sleep early.
