Crete: good to know

Which part of Crete is best for a first stay?

Around Heraklion for Knossos, the museum and short transfers; around Rethymno and Chania for the old towns and the olive country; the far west, beyond Kissamos, for Balos, Falassarna and the quietest coast. With a week, split it between the centre and the west.

Do you need a car in Crete?

Yes. Buses link the north-coast towns, but the villages, the beaches of the west and most good hotels are reached by car. Heraklion to Chania is about two hours by road.

Which Crete hotels hold a MICHELIN Key?

Six in the Guide's selection, checked on 26 September 2026, all with one Key. Three are here: Kapsaliana Village, Acro Suites and Manili. Tella Thera is in the Guide without a Key.

Heraklion or Chania airport?

Heraklion for the centre and the east — Agia Pelagia, Archanes, Kapsaliana. Chania for the west — Kissamos, Balos, Falassarna. Flying into one and out of the other saves a day of driving.

Is Crete worth it outside summer?

Yes, for walking, food and the archaeological sites: spring brings the wild flowers, and September the grape harvest in the wine villages. The sea stays swimmable into October, but many hotels close from November to April.
