The verdict
Forty-five suites and four villas stepped down the cliff of Mononaftis Bay, west of Heraklion, in local stone and timber, most with a plunge pool of their own and some carved into the rock. Opened in June 2021 and finished by CMH Architecture, it is adults only, built around wellbeing — a bath house, a yoga pavilion open to the breeze — and holds one MICHELIN Key. The view does the rest.
Couples who want the sea below, a pool of their own and a hotel that takes rest seriously.
You want a village or a beach at the door: the bay is below the cliff, and the hotel is its own world.
Book a table on Cremnos's terrace for sunset rather than later, and ask for a suite on the lower levels, where the pools hang closest to the water.
The rooms
Forty-five suites and four villas, all facing the sea, most with a private plunge pool on the cliff edge or in a stone cave. Interiors are stone, wood and linen, with good mattresses and a minibar of local produce.
The setting
On the headland of Mononaftis Bay at Agia Pelagia, on Crete's north coast, with the bay and its coves below. It is the smaller, quieter sister of the Sea Side Resort next door, whose facilities Acro's guests can use.
The food
Cremnos, on a terrace over the bay, is modern Cretan and Greek cooking from the island's farms; Umi, in Agia Pelagia, is Japanese and Peruvian. Breakfast is served à la carte as well as from the buffet.
Getting there
About half an hour by car from Heraklion airport. A car is useful for the island, not for the hotel.
Good to know
Adults only. The Bath House has a hammam and a dry sauna; yoga and sound-healing sessions run in the pavilion. Paths between the levels are stepped.
