The verdict
Whitewashed houses on a side street of Archanes, a wine village under Mount Giouchtas less than half an hour from Heraklion, turned into suites and villas around a courtyard with a pool carved round a rock. The rooms are cave-like and calm, in stone and pale wood, some with a hot tub on the roof facing the mountains. It holds one MICHELIN Key, and it is a village stay rather than a resort.
A base for Knossos, Heraklion and the wineries, with a village square for dinner.
You want the sea: Archanes is inland, and the nearest beaches are a half-hour drive.
Ask for one of the suites with a rooftop hot tub, and walk up Mount Giouchtas in the early morning, before the heat — the path starts from the village.
The rooms
Twenty-six suites and villas, according to the Guide, in whitewashed buildings with exposed stone walls, earth-toned interiors, kitchenettes and walk-in showers. The multi-level suites and villas have more space, and some have open-air hot tubs with views of the mountains.
The setting
In the centre of Archanes, one of Crete's best-kept villages, with neoclassical houses, tavernas on the square and the vineyards of the Archanes wine region around it. Knossos is about ten kilometres away, and Heraklion under half an hour.
The food
Manili Bistro has its own terrace in the courtyard; the tavernas of the village square are a short walk, and the Archanes wineries are nearby.
Getting there
About 25 minutes by car from Heraklion and its airport. A car is useful for the island; the village itself is walkable.
Good to know
The courtyard pool is shared and small; the villas have their own. Some rooms face the bistro terrace, which is lively in the evening.
