The verdict
A 19th-century coastal fortress on the edge of the Bay of Palma, reborn as one of the Mediterranean's most singular hotels — ramparts, a sea-water pool carved into the rock and suites with private pools hidden behind stone walls. Dramatic, secluded and unlike anywhere else.
Travellers who want drama, privacy and a genuinely one-of-a-kind setting near Palma.
You want a sandy beach resort or a lively town on the doorstep — this is a secluded fortress.
Book a Sentinel Suite with its own private pool, and have dinner at the rock-side La Fortaleza restaurant.
The rooms
Around 30 suites set into a former military fortress, several with private plunge pools and walled terraces for total seclusion. Stone, white and natural textures throughout; the Sentinel and Bastion suites are the showpieces. Adults-leaning, design-led and intensely private.
The setting
On the Enderrocat cape at the southern edge of the Bay of Palma, with ramparts running down to a sea-water pool cut into the rock and a tiny private cove below. Secluded and wild, yet only about 20 minutes from Palma and the airport.
The food
La Fortaleza serves Mediterranean fine dining on a terrace just above the water; Sa Cova is a more intimate, cave-like space. Local seafood, Balearic produce and a serious wine list.
Getting there
About 20 minutes from Palma de Mallorca airport and the city. A car or hotel transfer is useful given the secluded cape location; parking on site.
Good to know
Singular and pricey — you're paying for the fortress setting and the privacy. Swimming is via the rock-cut sea pool and a small cove rather than a sandy beach. Book suites with private pools well ahead.
