Hotel Aiguablava

Begur, Spain

Verified by our editors · June 2026

The verdict

A family-run clifftop classic perched over the turquoise cove of Fornells, kept by the same family for three generations. Rooms are unfussy and many open straight to the sea view; the appeal is the setting and the warmth, not designer interiors. One of the great Mediterranean view hotels.

Best for

Travellers who put the sea view and a genuine family welcome above all else.

Skip if

You expect five-star polish or contemporary design — this is honest, classic comfort.

Insider tip

The sea-view rooms are worth the premium; the interior-facing ones miss the whole point.

The rooms

Around 80 comfortable, classically furnished rooms, progressively refreshed over the years. The whole point is the sea-view category — rooms and terraces that look straight down over the Fornells cove; the interior- and garden-facing rooms are cheaper but miss the view that defines the place.

The setting

Perched on the cliffs above the Fornells and Aiguablava coves, with some of the clearest turquoise water on the Costa Brava directly below and the Camí de Ronda footpath from the door. A garden, pool and a small jetty area complete the setting; Begur village is 10 minutes up the hill.

The food

The restaurant and terrace look out over the bay and lean on Catalan and Mediterranean cooking with local seafood and rice dishes. Half-board is popular here given the cliffside location; the sunset aperitif on the terrace is the ritual.

Getting there

About 45 minutes from Girona–Costa Brava airport; Begur town is 10 minutes away and Barcelona roughly 1h45. A car is recommended — the coves and villages nearby reward exploring — and there's parking on site.

Good to know

Run by the same family for three generations and largely seasonal (spring to autumn). It's honest, classic comfort rather than designer luxury, and it's genuinely family-friendly. Book sea-view well ahead for July–August.
