The verdict
A hotel built down a cliff a few minutes from Positano, below a 17th-century chapel to San Pietro, opened in 1970 and still owned by the Cinque family. It is one room deep: every room has the rock at its back and a terrace over the sea at its front. A lift cut through the cliff drops to the only private beach in Positano and a tennis court at the water's edge, and ten terraces of organic garden supply Zass, which holds a MICHELIN Star. Three MICHELIN Keys.
The Amalfi Coast at its most complete: the sea from every room, a beach, a pool and a starred dinner without leaving the cliff.
You are travelling with young children (it takes them from ten) or you mind heights: the hotel is a staircase down a rock face.
Take the free shuttle into Positano for the evening walk and come back for dinner at Zass; the Terrace Bar faces the town at sunset.
The rooms
Fifty-seven rooms and suites, from Classic rooms of 22 m² to Signature rooms of 60 m² designed by Fausta Gaetani, all with a terrace over the sea and tiles made by local artisans.
The setting
On the Laurito headland just east of Positano, carved into the rock. The pool sits on a terrace looking towards Praiano, and the gardens drop in ten terraces to the sea.
The food
Zass, with one MICHELIN Star, is Alois Vanlangenaeker's kitchen, Mediterranean and close to the local produce. Carlino is the restaurant on the water, and the Terrace Bar and L'Alcova serve drinks.
Getting there
Free private parking, rare on this coast, and a 24-hour shuttle into Positano. The hotel also has its own dock for arrivals by sea.
Good to know
Open from April to October. Children from ten. The beach club and the pool are for hotel guests only.
