The verdict

Eight rooms in a monumental 19th-century house in Haría, the green valley in the north where Manrique chose to live. Chandeliers, clawfoot baths, green shutters and the island's oldest private library — a hotel that feels like a family house that kept its furniture, not a renovation that bought some.

Best for

Slow trips built around the north of the island, and anyone who would rather sleep in a house than a hotel.

Skip if

You want a pool, sea access or a base for the southern beaches — Haría is a forty-minute drive from most of them.

Insider tip

Ask for a room off the courtyard: it is the part of the house that does the work, taking light down into the middle of the building and collecting the rain.

The rooms

Eight rooms, all different, in a house classified as monumental. Historic wooden floors and doors, crystal chandeliers, the occasional freestanding bath, and a restraint about the contemporary additions that is rarer than it sounds. The Canary Islands government's Hotel Emblemático designation is a real one and it shows in what was kept.

The setting

Haría sits in the valley of a thousand palms, the greenest place on Lanzarote and the one with its own microclimate — mountains behind, a cliff wall alongside, and thirty orange trees against the facade that gave the house its name. Manrique's last home and studio are in the same valley. It is the north, so it is cooler, wetter and considerably less trodden than the south.

The food

Traditional island cooking in the house restaurant and an à-la-carte breakfast built on local produce rather than a buffet. There is also a private library of 19th-century volumes, said to be the oldest on the island, and an old arched cistern below.

Getting there

Roughly 35 minutes from Arrecife airport on the road over the Tabayesco pass, which is worth doing in daylight the first time. Haría village is walkable; everything else on the island is a drive.

Good to know

No pool and no sea — this is a manor house in a mountain valley, and the north can be several degrees cooler and greyer than the south on the same day. Eight rooms means the restaurant and the terrace are quiet, and it also means booking early in winter.
