The verdict
Rafael Moneo, winner of the Pritzker Prize, restored this medieval palace in the Gothic Quarter, and the building still carries part of Barcelona's first-century Roman wall, a defence tower and 12th-century frescoes. There are only 28 rooms, a courtyard under orange trees and a pool on the roof. It holds a MICHELIN Key. No other hotel in the city lets you sleep inside this much history.
History you can touch, in a small hotel at the heart of the old city.
You want a large hotel's facilities: this is an intimate house.
Take a drink up to the rooftop pool at dusk, when the Gothic Quarter's bell towers light up around you.
The rooms
Twenty-eight rooms with original beams and stone walls, several opening onto the courtyard.
The setting
In the Gothic Quarter, a ten-minute walk from Las Ramblas, the cathedral and the port.
The food
The restaurant sits under medieval arches; the courtyard, the cocktail bar and Le Bouchon complete the house.
Getting there
About 25 minutes by taxi from El Prat airport; Jaume I metro is a few minutes' walk.
Good to know
The rooftop pool is for hotel guests only.
