The verdict

A Benedictine monastery on the hillside above Portofino that Baron Baratta made his family's summer house in the 19th century and that became the hotel of the 1950s Riviera, with Elizabeth Taylor, Humphrey Bogart and Ava Gardner among its guests. Belmond has just spent three years restoring it with the designer Martin Brudnizki: fifty-three rooms and suites, most facing the sea, a heated pool, a tennis court and a Dior Spa. Promoted to three MICHELIN Keys in 2026.

Best for

Portofino from above, with the village a short shuttle ride or a fifteen-minute walk down.

Skip if

You want to step straight onto the Piazzetta: that is the sister hotel, Splendido Mare, down at the harbour.

Insider tip

Have a drink at Baratta Sedici, the new bar, and walk down to the village at dusk; the free shuttle brings you back up.

The rooms

Fifty-three rooms and suites, from 22 m² rooms to signature suites of 127 m², redecorated by Martin Brudnizki with a mix of mid-century and antique pieces; almost all face the sea. Villa Beatrice is a private villa for a family or friends.

The setting

On the hillside above the bay of Portofino, on the foundations of a 16th-century Benedictine monastery, in gardens with a heated outdoor pool and a tennis court.

The food

La Terrazza, with chef Corrado Corti, cooks Ligurian food — Santa Margherita prawns, Chiavari hazelnuts, Portofino saffron — on a terrace over the bay; the Splendido Grill is the easier lunch, and Baratta Sedici the cocktail bar.

Getting there

Genoa airport is 45 minutes to an hour by car, Pisa an hour and a half to two. The hotel has valet parking, rare in a village that is largely pedestrian.

Good to know

Open from April to October. A free shuttle runs to Splendido Mare in the Piazzetta through the day. The three Keys are those of the Guide's 2026 selection.
