Where it is still summer in October: five hotels for autumn sun
Summer does not end everywhere at the same time. In Lanzarote, the Algarve and the Cádiz coast, October still means warm days, long lunches outside and dinner with the windows open. Five places to stretch it.

For the surest warmth, César Lanzarote, 20 adults-only rooms between the volcanoes. For a historic house on the Atlantic cliffs, Bela Vista at Praia da Rocha. For a two-star dinner by the sea, Vila Joya. For a town on foot, Colégio Charm House in Tavira. For a quiet country house near the Costa de la Luz, Casa La Siesta outside Vejer.
October is the month when northern Europe closes its terraces and the south keeps them open. Lanzarote, off the coast of Africa, is warm all year; the Algarve and the Cádiz coast face the Atlantic and usually hold on to summer well into autumn, with the sea still carrying the summer's warmth.
These five hotels make the most of it: a volcanic island, two very different houses on the Algarve's western cliffs, a town palace in Tavira and a country house near Vejer.

The five hotels at a glance
October also brings lower rates and fewer crowds than August. Only Lanzarote can promise warmth into winter; on the Atlantic coasts, the weather in late October is a gamble worth taking.
| Hotel | Where | Why in October | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| César Lanzarote | La Asomada, Lanzarote | Warm all year, with volcanoes behind and the sea below | Adults only, from 16; you need a car |
| Bela Vista | Praia da Rocha, Algarve | A 1918 palace on the cliff, a starred restaurant | Not recommended for children |
| Vila Joya | Praia da Galé, Algarve | 13 rooms above the dunes and a two-star restaurant | Small and priced at the top |
| Colégio Charm House | Tavira, Algarve | A town on foot, a courtyard pool and a rooftop | The beach is on an island, by boat |
| Casa La Siesta | Near Vejer, Cádiz | Eight rooms and villas in the countryside near the beaches | Tiny, and books out early |
César Lanzarote: the surest warmth
César Lanzarote stands on land that belonged to César Manrique's family, high on the slope at La Asomada, between the volcanoes and the black-gravel vineyards of La Geria. It holds 20 adults-only rooms, an infinity pool, a restaurant and a bar for the last hour of light over the sea.
Nothing is walkable, and the wind on this side of the island is real, so ask for a sheltered terrace. It is about 15 minutes from Arrecife airport.

Bela Vista: a palace on the Algarve cliffs
Bela Vista Hotel & Spa is a summer palace built in 1918 on the cliff above Praia da Rocha, whose tiled staircase tells The Lusiads, Camões's epic poem. It is now a Relais & Châteaux house in three buildings, with Vista, a MICHELIN-starred restaurant, and two MICHELIN Keys.
Ask for a room in the Palacete, the original house. In October the beach below is quieter than in summer, and the terraces still work for lunch.

Vila Joya: dinner by the sea
Vila Joya, above Praia da Galé west of Albufeira, keeps 13 rooms in a private villa among gardens that run down towards the dunes. Dieter Koschina's restaurant here was the first in Portugal to earn two MICHELIN Stars, and the hotel holds two MICHELIN Keys.
Book the restaurant when you book the room, and keep an evening for Vila Joya Sea, the hotel's beach shack.
Colégio Charm House: Tavira on foot
Colégio Charm House is an 18th-century palacete — a town palace — in the centre of Tavira, with rooms in its former chapel, a pool in a courtyard of orange trees and a rooftop over the town. It holds a MICHELIN Key.
Tavira is the town to walk in the eastern Algarve, and in October the long beach on Ilha de Tavira, reached by boat, is far emptier than in summer; check the boat times, which shorten after the season.

Casa La Siesta: the Costa de la Luz, off season
Casa La Siesta keeps six bedrooms and two villas in the countryside ten minutes' drive from Vejer de la Frontera, around gardens and a saltwater pool. The wild beaches of Zahara de los Atunes, Bolonia and El Palmar are a short drive away.
It is small and personal, and it books out well ahead. The Costa de la Luz is windier and wilder than the Mediterranean coast; that is part of its appeal.
How to plan an October trip in the sun
Book flights early for the October half-term and the 12 October long weekend in Spain, when these coasts fill with short breaks. Most of these hotels are open all year, but check restaurant and pool hours: some services shorten after the summer season.
For a longer trip, the Algarve and the Cádiz coast can be joined: Tavira is about three and a half hours by road from Vejer, across the Guadiana and round Seville.
How we selected these hotels
This selection comes from our Still Summer series on Instagram. Every hotel is scored on the public Unlisted Index, and the facts were checked against each hotel's own website on 14 September 2026. MICHELIN Keys are those of the current selection; the 2026 selection is published on 18 September 2026.

Frequently asked questions
Where is it still warm in October in southern Europe?
The Canary Islands are the surest bet, warm all year. On the mainland, the Algarve and the Cádiz coast of the Costa de la Luz usually keep summer weather well into October, with fewer people than in August.
Can you swim in the sea in October?
Usually, yes, in the Canaries and often in the Algarve and on the Cádiz coast, where the sea still holds some of the summer's warmth. Conditions vary with the wind and the year, so a hotel pool is a useful back-up.
Which of these hotels are adults only?
César Lanzarote takes guests from 16. Bela Vista says it is not recommended for children, and Casa La Siesta is adults-leaning outside set family weeks. Vila Joya and Colégio Charm House welcome children.
Do you need a car?
In Lanzarote, near Vejer and at Vila Joya, yes. At Bela Vista you can stay by the beach without one, and in Tavira everything is on foot, with a train along the coast and boats to the island beaches.
