Where to stay for the grape harvest: five wine hotels in Spain, Portugal and Italy
From late summer into October the grapes come in, the presses start and the cellars smell of fermenting must. Five hotels among the vines — in the Priorat, the Douro, Montalcino and the Empordà — to be there while it happens.

For monastic history and a winery of its own, Terra Dominicata in the Priorat, adults only. For an intimate Douro estate, Quinta Nova Winery House, 11 rooms beside a winery of 1764. For the most remote Douro, Casa do Rio, among Quinta do Vallado's organic vines. For Brunello, Castiglion del Bosco in Montalcino. For a wine spa near Figueres, Hotel Peralada, whose winery celebrates the end of the harvest on 17 October.
The harvest — vendimia in Spain, vindima in Portugal, vendemmia in Italy — runs from late summer into October, depending on the region, the grape and the year. It is the best moment to stay in wine country: the vineyards are full of pickers, the presses are working and the cellars smell of fermenting must.
These five hotels put the harvest outside the window. Each has vines of its own or sits in the middle of an estate that does, and all five are scored on the public Unlisted Index.

The five hotels at a glance
You need a car for all five, and harvest weekends book up first: reserve the room and ask about the estate's harvest activities at the same time.
| Hotel | Region | Why go for the harvest | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Terra Dominicata | Priorat, Spain | Its own winery, on the farm where Carthusian monks grew vines | Adults only |
| Quinta Nova Winery House | Douro, Portugal | 11 rooms beside a working winery of 1764 | About two hours from Porto |
| Casa do Rio | Douro Superior, Portugal | Organic vines between the house and the river | Remote: stay at least two nights |
| Castiglion del Bosco | Montalcino, Italy | Brunello tastings in its own winery | A large estate at the top of the market |
| Hotel Peralada | Empordà, Spain | A wine spa and the winery's end-of-harvest day | A resort rather than a small house |
Terra Dominicata: where the monks planted the Priorat
Terra Dominicata occupies the farm where Carthusian monks once grew their vines, 1.5 km from the charterhouse of Escaladei and below the cliffs of the Montsant. Today it holds an adults-only hotel of 26 rooms and a winery of its own, where guests learn how Priorat wine is made.
Visit the cellar first and the ruins of the charterhouse afterwards: the valley makes sense in that order. The villages of the wine route, Gratallops and Porrera among them, are a short and beautiful drive.

Quinta Nova Winery House: one estate in the Douro, understood properly
Quinta Nova keeps its 11 rooms in a manor beside the estate's winery of 1764, above vineyard terraces planted centuries ago and 1.5 km of riverfront. The estate describes itself as the first in the Douro to open its doors to wine visitors, and it shows: trails lead from the house through the vines, and dinner at Terraçu is built around the estate's wines.
It is a Relais & Châteaux house, small and deliberately short on facilities. Book dinner with the room, and walk the vineyard trail before the tasting.

Casa do Rio: the far end of the Douro
Casa do Rio is Quinta do Vallado's hotel in the Douro Superior, near Foz Côa, set among the estate's organic vineyards; its main building sits over an orange grove between the vines and the river. The landscape is drier and emptier than around Pinhão and Régua, and far less visited.
Allow about two and a half hours from Porto and stay at least two nights. It pairs well with a night or two at Quinta Nova on the way.
Castiglion del Bosco: Brunello in the Val d'Orcia
Castiglion del Bosco, near Montalcino, is one of the historic producers of Brunello di Montalcino, and the estate holds tastings in its own winery. Rosewood runs it as a hotel of 42 suites and 11 villas with private pools, spread over the cypress hills of the Val d'Orcia.
It is large and priced at the top of Tuscany. Choose a villa for space, and leave time to taste at the winery rather than squeezing it between drives.
Hotel Peralada: a wine spa and the end of the harvest
Hotel Peralada stands beside the castle, the winery and the golf course of Peralada, in the Alt Empordà. Its 64 rooms come with a Wine Spa devoted to vinotherapy, and Figueres and the Dalí Theatre-Museum are about 15 minutes away.
On Saturday 17 October 2026 the Perelada winery celebrates the end of the harvest with Aires de Verema, a day-long celebration at the cellar. It is the right weekend to book.
When to go, and how to plan
Picking starts in late August or September in most of these regions and can run into October for later grapes. The dates move every year with the weather, so ask each hotel which weeks the estate expects to pick, and whether guests can join the picking or a tasting of the new wine.
Two Douro estates make a natural trip, with Quinta Nova in the centre of the valley and Casa do Rio at its far end. The Priorat and the Empordà are about two and a half hours apart by car, which is too far for one long weekend but fine for a week in Catalonia.
How we selected these hotels
This selection comes from our Harvest Season series on Instagram. Every hotel is scored on the public Unlisted Index, and the facts were checked against each hotel's own website on 14 September 2026; harvest events and dates change, so confirm them when you book.
Availability buttons may use affiliate links and can earn The Unlisted a commission without changing your price. Commercial links do not decide inclusion.
Frequently asked questions
When is the grape harvest in Spain, Portugal and Italy?
From late summer into October. Most regions start picking in late August or September, and later grapes can run into October. Exact dates depend on the year's weather, so ask the estate before you book.
Can you take part in the harvest at a wine hotel?
Often, yes. Many wine estates run harvest activities for guests, from picking to tastings of the new wine, but they are scheduled week by week. Ask the hotel when you book the room.
What is the best wine hotel for the harvest?
It depends on the trip. Terra Dominicata suits couples who want the Priorat and its own winery, Quinta Nova an intimate Douro estate, Castiglion del Bosco a full Tuscan estate with Brunello, and Hotel Peralada a wine spa near the Costa Brava.
Do you need a car for a wine-country stay?
Yes, for all five of these hotels. Estates sit outside the villages, and the best way to see a wine region is to drive between cellars — with a designated driver or a private transfer if you plan to taste seriously.
