Where should you stay in Alt Empordà?
Choose Peralada for wine and a resort-style hotel, Figueres for museums and practical transport, or Cadaqués for coastal atmosphere and Cap de Creus. Each base produces a different trip.
Is Alt Empordà the same as Baix Empordà?
No. They are separate counties. Alt Empordà lies farther north around Figueres, Peralada, Cadaqués and Cap de Creus; Baix Empordà covers Begur, Palafrugell, Pals and the medieval interior.
Do you need a car in Alt Empordà?
A car is useful for wineries, rural hotels and Cap de Creus. Figueres itself works by train and on foot, but combining it with vineyards and the coast requires a vehicle, driver or carefully reserved transfers.
How many nights should you spend in Alt Empordà?
Two nights suit either wine country or the coast. Three or four allow a winery, Figueres and Cadaqués without compressing every day; add another base only when the trip is longer.
