Introducing Spain

Spain is where The Unlisted began, and where the selection runs deepest: the coves of the Costa Brava and the Balearics, the wine estates of the Priorat, Rioja and the Duero, Andalusia's cities and coast, the grand hotels of Madrid and Barcelona, and the volcanic north of Lanzarote. Distances are larger than they look on a map, so it pays to choose one region per trip and let it set the pace.

Your travel notes

  • Currency

The euro. Cards, including contactless, are accepted almost everywhere; carry a little cash for village bars and markets.

  • Food and meal times

Lunch is the main meal, from about 2 to 4 pm, and dinner rarely starts before 9. Each region cooks its own way: rice by the Mediterranean, seafood in Galicia, roast lamb on the Duero.

  • Getting around

High-speed trains link Madrid with Barcelona, Seville, Málaga and Valladolid. The islands are a short flight or a ferry away, and the countryside needs a car.

  • Tipping

Not expected. Rounding up, or leaving 5–10% for good service in a restaurant, is appreciated.

  • When to go

May–June and September–October for most of the country. July and August are hot inland and busy on the coast; winter stays mild on the south coast and in the Canaries.

Questions

Tips for travel in Spain

Which region of Spain should I choose for a first boutique-hotel trip?

For sea and villages, the Costa Brava or Menorca; for wine and landscape, the Priorat or Rioja; for cities and warmth into autumn, Andalusia. Each has a guide on this page to help choose the area before the hotel.

Do you need a car in Spain?

Between cities, no: the high-speed trains are faster than driving. For wine country, the Empordà or the Balearic countryside, yes — most of the best rural hotels are outside any village.

Where is it still warm in Spain in winter?

The Canaries, where Lanzarote stays around 20 °C, and the coast of Málaga and Cádiz. The Balearics and the Costa Brava are mild but many of their hotels close from November to March.
