The verdict
An 11th-century masia — a Catalan farmhouse — turned into a hotel on a 12-hectare estate of olive groves and vineyards outside Pau, in the Alt Empordà, with seventeen rooms, an overflow pool facing the fields and a MICHELIN Key. Five kilometres from Roses and on the way to Cadaqués, it is a calm country base for Cap de Creus and Dalí country.
Couples who want countryside, a pool and a good table, with Cadaqués, Roses and the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes all within half an hour.
You want to walk to the sea or to a village with restaurants: this is a country estate, and you will drive.
Drive up to Sant Pere de Rodes in the morning, before the heat and the coaches, and be back for lunch on the terrace.
The rooms
Seventeen rooms and suites in several categories, from 20 m² doubles to suites with terraces and a 90 m² apartment. Interiors are white and full of light, with timber beams and, in some rooms, a free-standing bath.
The setting
On the road between Roses and Pau, among the vineyards of the DO Empordà at the foot of the Serra de Rodes. Roses and its bay are about five kilometres away, Figueres and the Dalí Theatre-Museum about 15 minutes, and Cadaqués around half an hour over the hills.
The food
The restaurant cooks local produce in a Mediterranean key under a covered terrace that looks over the countryside. Roses and Cadaqués have plenty for a dinner out.
Getting there
About 50 minutes from Girona airport and two hours from Barcelona. A car is essential.
Good to know
An overflow pool, a wellness area and treatments. Pets up to 20 kg are accepted for a fee. Summer weekends bring the crowds of Roses and Cadaqués to the area; June and September are the sweet spot.
