Puerto Escondido & the Oaxaca Coast: good to know
How do you get from Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido?
By air or by road. Small regional airlines fly between the two cities in under an hour, and Puerto Escondido also has direct flights from Mexico City. By road, the Barranca Larga–Ventanilla highway, opened in February 2024, has cut the trip through the Sierra Sur to about three hours from six or more; it is still a mountain road, best driven by day.
Is it safe to swim at Zicatela?
No, for most people. Zicatela is a powerful beach break known as the Mexican Pipeline, with strong currents; it is for experienced surfers. Swim at the sheltered coves of Carrizalillo, Puerto Angelito or Manzanillo, and learn to surf at La Punta, at the southern end of Zicatela, where the waves are gentler.
When is the best time to go to Puerto Escondido?
November to April is dry and hot, with calmer seas. The biggest swells arrive from May to September, which surfers want and swimmers should not. The rainy and hurricane season runs from June to October.
Should you stay in town or outside it?
In town, around La Punta and Zicatela, for surf, restaurants and walking to dinner. Outside, along the coast at places like Punta Pájaros, for quiet and architecture, but you will need a car or taxi for every outing.
Can you combine the coast with Oaxaca City?
Yes, and it is the most natural trip in the region: four nights in the city and valley, then three or four on the coast, flying between them or driving the new highway. From Europe, both are reached through Mexico City.
