The verdict

Fourteen brick villas in a line between the mountains and the Pacific at Punta Pájaros, west of Puerto Escondido, built by the architect Alberto Kalach for Grupo Habita and opened in 2022. The hotel runs entirely on solar power, off the grid; each villa has a terrace, a private plunge pool and slatted walls that let the breeze through, with books in place of televisions. It is in the MICHELIN Guide, without a Key in the 2026 selection, and it is one of the most remarkable buildings on the Mexican coast.

Best for

A few slow days of reading, swimming and eating, in architecture that asks you to switch off.

Skip if

You want air conditioning, a lively town or a beach bar: the villas are open to the air, and Puerto Escondido is a drive away.

Insider tip

Swim in your villa's pool at sunset, and book the hexagonal spa's hot and cold baths for the late afternoon, when the brick has cooled.

The rooms

Fourteen villas, each with a king bed, a rain shower, a large bathtub, a furnished terrace and its own plunge pool looking towards the Pacific. Living rooms and bedrooms are partly open to the air; interiors are by Carlos Couturier.

The setting

Off the coastal highway at Punta Pájaros, among dry tropical scrub, with the beach a short walk away and the Sierra behind. The spa, a hexagon of brick, has a hammam and a bathing pool; there is also a library.

The food

Terrícola, the open-air restaurant, cooks Mexican and Mediterranean dishes from local produce, from breakfast to dinner.

Getting there

About 30 minutes by car from Puerto Escondido and its airport; Huatulco's airport is further east along the coast.

Good to know

Designed for grown-ups and for disconnection: there are no televisions, and the power comes from the sun. The sea along this coast is often rough; ask the staff before swimming.
