Oaxaca: good to know

The city or the coast?

The city for food, markets, mezcal and architecture; the coast for the sea and some of Mexico's most original small hotels. Four nights in each is a good first trip.

How do you get from Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido?

By a short regional flight, or by road over the Sierra Madre, which is best driven by day. Flying in to one and out of the other avoids doubling back.

Can you swim at Puerto Escondido?

Not at Zicatela, which is a surf beach with strong currents. Calmer coves such as Carrizalillo are a short taxi ride away.
