The verdict

Grupo Habita's first hotel in Oaxaca City, opened in December 2019: a restored 19th-century casona joined to a timber-clad tower by the architect Alberto Kalach. Twelve rooms, warm and plain, in pale wood and earth-coloured plaster, with furniture made by local craftsmen; a small pool and a bar on the roof over the city; and a restaurant where chef Saúl Carranza changes a tasting menu every week. It is in the MICHELIN Guide, without a Key — the quieter sister of Otro Oaxaca, a few blocks away.

Best for

Travellers who want a design hotel in the centre at a residential scale, and a good table downstairs.

Skip if

You want big rooms: most are 20 to 23 square metres, and only the Top Suite is larger.

Insider tip

Book a Balcony Room on the upper floors of the tower for the view over the rooftops, and keep one evening for the weekly tasting menu.

The rooms

Twelve rooms: four in the restored casona and eight in the tower — two with patios, six with balconies. Balcony Rooms are 20 square metres, Patio Rooms 21, Deluxe Rooms 23 and the Top Suite 40. Interiors are by the studio DÉCADA with Carlos Couturier.

The setting

In the historic centre, a few blocks from its main sights, with the restaurant's large windows on Calle Morelos. The rooftop, with a small pool, day-beds and the bar, looks out over the city.

The food

The restaurant, known as the Culture Room, seats 22 in the entrance hall; chef Saúl Carranza builds a weekly tasting menu around organic produce, and the kitchen runs from breakfast to late evening.

Getting there

About 20 minutes by car from Oaxaca International Airport. The centre is walkable.

Good to know

Not to be confused with Hotel Escondido, the group's beach hotel near Puerto Escondido. Pets are accepted for a fee, and room service runs around the clock.
