The verdict

Sixteen rooms on Calle Macedonio Alcalá, directly across from the church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, opened by Grupo Habita in August 2023. The architect João Boto Caeiro of RootStudio drew its plan from the Zapotec site of Mitla and built it in brick, board-marked concrete, timber and stone: stairs cut like a temple, a 30-foot pool on the roof facing the church's twin towers, and underground a round spa pool lit by a single shaft of daylight. It is in the MICHELIN Guide, without a Key, and it is the most striking new building in the historic centre.

Best for

Couples who want to be in the centre, on foot to everything, in a building worth the trip on its own.

Skip if

You want a quiet street: Alcalá is the city's pedestrian spine, and the rooftop and bar are lively in the evening.

Insider tip

Go down to the spa in the late morning, when the sun stands over the opening in the vault, and book the rooftop's long communal table for dinner facing Santo Domingo.

The rooms

Sixteen rooms in four categories: Superior rooms of about 21 square metres with king beds, Deluxe rooms of 27 with a panoramic window, Junior Suites, and the Townhouse of about 80 square metres with its own terrace. Interiors are by Grupo Habita's Carlos Couturier: raw plaster, timber panelling, round concrete tubs.

The setting

At Macedonio Alcalá 505, on the pedestrian street that climbs to Santo Domingo, in the heart of a historic centre listed by UNESCO. The markets, the cathedral square and the city's best restaurants are within a fifteen-minute walk.

The food

The restaurant, with a patio on the ground floor, is chef Saúl Carranza's reading of the flavours of the region; on the roof, a communal table seats 24. Otro Bar mixes some of the city's best mezcal cocktails — mezcal being the spirit distilled from roasted agave hearts.

Getting there

About 20 minutes by car from Oaxaca International Airport, which has direct flights from Mexico City and several US cities. In the city itself, you walk.

Good to know

Children are welcome, with no special facilities for them. The spa's plunge pool is heated, about six metres across. A space called the Bunker hosts screenings, co-working and cultural events.
