Oaxaca City & the Valley: good to know

When is the best time to visit Oaxaca City?

The dry season, from November to April, brings clear days and cool nights. The rains fall mostly from June to September, usually as afternoon storms. Día de Muertos, from 31 October to 2 November, and the Guelaguetza dance festival, on two Mondays in late July, are the high points of the year — book months ahead for both.

How many days do you need in Oaxaca City?

Three or four days for the centre, the markets, Monte Albán and one day in the valley. Add two nights outside the city — in the valley or on the coast — if you have a week.

Which mezcal villages can you visit from Oaxaca City?

Santiago Matatlán, which calls itself the world capital of mezcal, lies on the road east to Mitla, about an hour from the city, with palenques — traditional distilleries — open to visitors. Teotitlán del Valle, on the same road, is known for its wool rugs. Go with a driver: tastings are generous.

Do you need a car in Oaxaca City?

Not in the centre, which is compact and best on foot. For the valley — Monte Albán, Mitla, Hierve el Agua and the mezcal villages — hire a driver or join a tour for the day.

Which Oaxaca City hotels are in the MICHELIN Guide?

Otro Oaxaca, Casa Antonieta and Escondido Oaxaca are all selected by the Guide, without a Key, checked on 30 September 2026. None of the city's hotels holds a Key this year; in the whole state, the Keys go to five small hotels. Casa Silencio, in the valley, is not in the Guide.
