The verdict
Nine rooms in one of the oldest buildings of Oaxaca, on Avenida Hidalgo: the house goes back to 1529, when the Spanish town of Antequera was laid out, and belonged to the old convent of San Pablo. Stone columns carry the whole building, symmetrical arches frame a courtyard full of plants, and the rooms set weathered walls against rattan headboards, pale timber and local crafts. It is in the MICHELIN Guide without a Key, and it feels more like a house than a hotel.
A calm base in the centre for travellers who will eat out every night in Mexico's great food city.
You want a pool or a spa: there is neither, and the evenings are for the streets.
Take breakfast in the courtyard and end the day on the rooftop terrace, Amá Terraza, before walking out to dinner.
The rooms
Nine in all: three Antonieta Suites for up to four, some with a kitchenette and an interior patio; three Standard rooms with a king bed; two Junior Suites with private patios and stone desks; and the Apapacho Suite, an apartment with a kitchenette and a separate studio.
The setting
At Hidalgo 911, in the historic centre, within walking distance of the zócalo, the cathedral and the markets. The courtyard, under its stone arcade, is the hotel's living room.
The food
Muss Café, on the ground floor, serves coffee and breakfast; Amá Terraza is the rooftop terrace for a glass at sunset. For lunch and dinner the whole city is at the door.
Getting there
About 20 minutes by car from Oaxaca International Airport. Everything in the centre is walkable.
Good to know
A small, house-like hotel: service is warm and personal rather than round-the-clock. Some rooms face inner patios and are dim by design; ask for Room 1, 6 or 14 if you want the big windows.
