The verdict
Nine suites in raw, board-marked concrete at La Punta, the southern end of Zicatela, completed in 2022 by the architect Ludwig Godefroy as his reading of an Oaxacan temple. Pools run through round openings cut in the walls, guests lounge on stepped concrete blocks, vines climb the façade, and on the roof Glou Glou pours natural wine with the coast's seafood. It is adults only, in the MICHELIN Guide without a Key, and five blocks from one of the Pacific's best-known surf beaches.
Couples and surfers who want architecture first, a short walk to the waves and a good glass of wine at night.
You want polish and service on a large scale: this is a small, stark house run lightly, in a lively surf neighbourhood.
Ask for a Terrace Suite, with its bath in the open air, and watch the surfers at La Punta at sunrise before the wind comes up.
The rooms
Nine suites in two types: Garden Suites of 33 square metres with a private garden, and Terrace Suites of 38 with an outdoor tub. Concrete walls, timber louvres, handwoven rugs and king beds.
The setting
In Brisas de Zicatela, the La Punta end of Puerto Escondido's long surf beach, among palms and low houses. The beach is five blocks away; the bars and taquerías of La Punta are on foot.
The food
Glou Glou, on the roof, cooks seasonal dishes from the Oaxacan coast with fresh local produce, alongside a list of natural wines.
Getting there
About 15 minutes by car from Puerto Escondido's airport, which has direct flights from Mexico City.
Good to know
Adults only. The concierge desk is staffed from 7am to 11pm. The sea at Zicatela is for experienced surfers, not for swimming; calmer coves such as Carrizalillo are a short taxi ride away.
