The verdict
Palazzo Papadopoli, a 16th-century palace in San Polo that the hotel counts among the eight monumental palazzi of the Grand Canal, and one of the few in Venice with gardens of its own. Aman has made it twenty-four rooms and suites of painted ceilings, silk walls and works by Sansovino and Tiepolo, set against the restraint of Jean-Michel Gathy's furniture, and almost every room looks onto the Grand Canal. Three MICHELIN Keys, and the nearest Venice comes to staying in a private palazzo.

The rooms
Twenty-four rooms, signature rooms and suites, each different, with frescoes, fireplaces, chinoiserie and painted ceilings; almost all face the Grand Canal. The Coccina's Apartment takes the whole fourth floor, reached by its own lift.
The setting
On Calle Tiepolo in the sestiere of San Polo, with the main façade on the Grand Canal and Piazza San Marco a short walk away. The gardens run along the water, and lunch and drinks are served there in good weather.
The food
Arva cooks all day, with dinner from 7 pm, in the piano nobile and in the garden; there is a bar and a kitchen table in the palazzo's kitchen. The restaurants are open to non-residents.
Getting there
About fifty minutes by boat from Marco Polo airport. In Venice itself, the city is on foot or by water.
Good to know
