The verdict
Giuseppe Cipriani, of Harry's Bar, decided in 1956 to build a hotel on Giudecca for people who wanted St Mark's close but not underfoot, and it opened two years later. It is still Venice's great resort: gardens on the lagoon, a heated saltwater pool built far larger than planned and still the only one in central Venice, and the hotel's own boat across to St Mark's in five minutes. Oro, under Massimo Bottura's direction, holds a MICHELIN Star, and the hotel three Keys. It is closed until 1 June 2027.

You want to wake up inside the city's lanes: Giudecca is across the water, and the hotel is a world of its own.
Book dinner at Cip's Club, on a wooden terrace facing St Mark's, and keep a long lunch for Il Porticciolo by the pool.
The rooms
Fifty-five rooms, twenty suites and four signature suites of up to 188 m², in an 18th-century style with lagoon views. Sixteen rooms and suites are in the Palazzo Vendramin, a 15th-century residence, with butler service.
The setting
On Giudecca, in gardens on the lagoon, five minutes by the hotel's boat from St Mark's Square. The pool, heated to 28–30 °C, is the social centre of the hotel in summer.
The food
Oro, renovated by Peter Marino and run by Vania Ghedini under the culinary direction of Massimo Bottura, holds one MICHELIN Star. Cip's Club has the terrace facing St Mark's, Il Porticciolo serves lunch by the pool, San Giorgio is a trattoria on the lagoon, and Dior has a bacaro here.
Getting there
Thirty to forty-five minutes by water taxi from Marco Polo airport and about twenty from Santa Lucia station, to the hotel's own pier. A free hotel boat runs from its station at San Zaccaria.
Good to know
Closed until 1 June 2027, according to the hotel's own site. Children from four may use the pool with an adult; there is a Dior Spa. The three Keys are those of the Guide's 2026 selection.
